Our Sins Are Not Under The Blood Of Jesus

This myth is repeated often in church.  Sometimes it is said from one believer to another, “you just need to put that sin under the blood” or we are assured by the speaker that our sins are under the blood of Jesus.  You may be thinking, “well, aren’t they?”  NO!  Jesus Christ did not come to merely “cover” our sins, but to remove sin.

John 1:29 (NKJV) The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

1 John 2:2 (NKJV) And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

Hebrews 10:4 (NKJV) For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

It is clear from these scriptures that Jesus took away the sin of the world.  Did Jesus accomplish His mission?  Did His sacrifice take away the sin of the world or not?  Under the Old Covenant, sin was “covered” or atoned for.  Atonement is the Hebrew word “Kapar” which means to cover.  The blood of innocent animals offered under the Old Covenant for men’s sins did not remove their sin, but covered their sins.  Their sins were pushed forward, but never taken away.

Hebrews 10:11-12 (NKJV) 11 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,

Jesus came to do something that no Levitical Priest could ever do, He sat down.  He didn’t sit down because He was tired, He sat down because “it is finished!”  The Old Covenant priest “stands daily and offering repeatedly”, they never sat down because their work was never finished.  Jesus offered one sacrifice, a better sacrifice (Hebrews 9:23), that took away sin.  The Law and the old sacrificial system was just a shadow of good things to come:

Hebrews 10:1-3 (NKJV)      1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the  things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.

Jesus Christ was the Good that was to come!  He didn’t come to hide our sins from God’s eyes, but to remove them as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12).  Jesus removed our “consciousness of sins”, because His blood purified us, made us righteous.  Under the old sacrificial system there is a reminder of sins every year.  Today most believers are reminded of their sins daily by satan and weekly by the church. It may sound like a good thing for someone to tell you that your sins are under the blood, but it is a myth.  This myth minimizes the work of Jesus and the power of His blood to remove sin.  God is not relating to you based on your sin, but on the basis of His Son.  Why?  Because your sin does not exist!  Jesus’ blood removed it.

  1. Pastor Dell thank you so much for teaching us the truth of what the Word really says! Ronnie, Josh and I haven’t been physically able to be at church in a long time but can continue to be taught and blessed by your blogs. We really appreciate you and your heart to teach truth!

  2. Amen!!! The Bible really tells us what we need to know, if everyone would read it. The thing is that most Christians don’t read their Bible that much. From the time I got saved I wanted to know all of the Bible, and I stopped counting how many times I’ve read it front to back. And a story my mom told us as kids, (which is too long to tell) made me always look up the scriptures that a pastor or anyone talked about out of the Bible. I always take notes and then later, I go study what was taught to me. And in doing that I really got the full understanding. And even now as you say, every Sunday many people are being taught myths, and don’t try to study for themselves. Now, there are more and more preachers telling the real truth about Jesus and his grace. And that’s a wonderful thing for everyone. Thank you.
